COUNTRY GUIDE

Eligibility and access rules differ. Indian families should verify whether a foreign competition accepts international entries before making plans.
IOQM and the Indian pathway
HBCSE describes IOQM as the first stage, followed by RMO, INMO, training and team selection leading to the IMO.
MAA American Mathematics Competitions
AMC 8, AMC 10 and AMC 12 are age/grade-based timed contests. AMC 10 and 12 begin the US pathway toward higher invitational stages and international team selection.
UKMT Mathematical Challenges
Junior, Intermediate and Senior Challenges engage more than 700,000 young people annually, with follow-on Kangaroo and Olympiad rounds.
Australian Mathematics Competition
Running since 1978, the AMC serves Years 3–12 through divisions and uses 30 problems to challenge and extend problem-solving skills.
Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge
The 2.5-hour COMC encourages exploration and problem solving. Strong performance can lead to the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad and national team pathway.
Singapore Mathematical Olympiad
Organised in national forms since the 1950s, SMO tests ingenuity and discovers talent through Junior, Senior and Open sections.
South African Mathematics Olympiad
SAMO progresses through three rounds for Grades 8–12, with the strongest students entering national-team consideration.
Math Kangaroo
An accessible international multiple-choice competition for school students, designed to encourage logical thinking and enjoyment of mathematics.
International Mathematical Olympiad
The IMO has been held annually since 1959 except 1980. National programmes select teams of students for the international contest.
DO NOT COMPARE ONLY BY NAME
“Olympiad” can mean very different levels.
- Open-entry contests may focus on accessible, age-appropriate challenges
- National selection olympiads may be proof-based and highly selective
- Some competitions are administered only through schools or registered centres
- Multiple-choice, integer-answer and full-proof formats require different preparation
- Official national-team pathways should be distinguished from private commercial contests

The best competition is the one that stretches without overwhelming.
