RMO full form: What is the RMO exam?

The Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) is the stage after IOQM and before INMO. Students solve a small set of challenging mathematics problems and explain their reasoning in complete written proofs. Use this page to check the current exam information, choose practice papers and plan your preparation.

Start with IOQM-to-RMO qualification if you are checking entry requirements, or go straight to the RMO syllabus and previous papers if you are ready to practise.

The official HBCSE cycle page is the authority for schedule changes, eligibility and later instructions. Do not use an older RMO page as the current notice.

Qualifying through IOQM

RMO 2026 eligibility and selection criteria

Scoring at least 10% in IOQM 2026 is the minimum threshold; qualification also depends on regional selection. Under the published rules:

• Category A: Classes 8–11. Each region selects the top 200 students, including ties at the last place.
• Category B: Class 12. Each region selects the top 40 students, including ties at the last place.
• Girls’ quota: Five additional Category A girls per region, with ties at the fifth place. Category B has no separate girls’ quota.

Overseas candidates are handled under the specific official rules. Check the 2026 qualification criteria PDF and the published selection list; a score estimate alone does not confirm qualification.

After qualification

RMO registration and hall ticket

The official MTA portal states that qualifying students must register again for RMO, with no payment involved. Follow the current HBCSE instructions for the registration window and hall-ticket process.

1. Confirm your name and details in the official qualification information.
2. Complete the required RMO registration according to the current notice.
3. Read the hall ticket and exam instructions carefully for your centre, reporting time and permitted items.

RMO vs IOQM: How the exams differ

Four major domains

RMO exam syllabus: the four main areas

HBCSE states that major Olympiad areas are algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory, with difficulty increasing through RMO, INMO and IMO. Topic names alone do not define readiness; proof depth does. The examples above are preparation priorities, not a separate official chapter list. How to write a complete RMO proof

1. Restate: identify the givens and exact target.
2. Explore: test small cases or draw a precise diagram on rough work.
3. Choose: name the main idea and any supporting lemma.
4. Write: connect claims in a logical order with reasons.
5. Check: handle equality, zero, sign, degeneracy or other boundary cases.
6. Conclude: state why the target now follows.

Definitions, theorem conditions and quantifiers matter. If equality occurs only in a special case, say so and verify it.

After IOQM

RMO preparation plan: eight to ten weeks

Adapt the sequence to the actual interval and the student’s IOQM diagnosis. Qualification should trigger immediate proof-writing practice, not a new collection of resources.

Choose the matching paper and solution set. Other years and regional variants are available in the official archive. Older papers are for practice; follow the current notice for 2026 exam-day rules.

Use the official HBCSE paper and solution archive. Official solutions are models, not the only valid approaches.

1. Attempt for a serious fixed period before reading a solution.
2. Mark the furthest justified point reached.
3. Compare the key idea, not just the final prose.
4. Close the solution and rewrite it independently.
5. Ask whether every theorem condition and case is visible.

Three-hour decisions

Read all six, then invest where progress is real

• Use an opening scan to identify familiar structures and accessible subclaims.
• Start with a problem where you can build a complete argument.
• If an approach stalls, preserve useful lemmas and switch before one problem consumes the paper.
• Leave space and label continuations clearly.
• Reserve time to check logical transitions, not only arithmetic.

A complete proof on fewer problems is generally stronger than disconnected observations across many, but partial progress should still be written clearly when it is mathematically justified.

Keep the stages separate

RMO cutoff, results and the next stage

The IOQM cutoff determines selection for RMO. RMO performance is then used for progression towards INMO under that cycle’s published rules. These are different selection stages, so an IOQM cutoff should not be treated as an RMO-to-INMO cutoff.
