The biggest change is not just difficulty. Students move from finding answers to explaining ideas with rigorous proofs.
Students solve numerical-answer problems on an OMR sheet.
Foundations, insight, accuracy and decisions under time.
Start here for the official Indian pathway; focus on habits, not shortcuts.
Students write complete solutions to six problems.
A correct final answer is no longer enough; reasoning must be communicated.
Proof writing and feedback become essential.
Six demanding proof problems are attempted over four and a half hours.
Depth, originality, proof quality and sustained concentration.
Progress is measured in quality of thought, not only marks.
Selected students receive intensive training and take selection tests.
Preparation becomes broader, deeper and internationally oriented.
Consistency, coachability and resilience matter alongside talent.
The selected team receives final preparation and represents India at the IMO.
World-class mathematical problem solving across two contest days.
The journey is highly selective; the learning gained at every stage still has lasting value.
A sensible preparation sequence
Build fluency in algebra, number theory, geometry and combinatorics.
Understand why methods work instead of memorising isolated tricks.
Practise authentic questions and maintain an error notebook.
Develop selection, accuracy and calm decision-making under time.
Parent questions
No. It is the first stage in India’s Mathematical Olympiad pathway, not a school or college admission exam.
No. The minimum percentage is necessary, but not sufficient. Official regional, category and other selection criteria apply each year.
No. Students can prepare independently. A structured programme may help with sequencing, feedback, proof writing and regular practice.
No. The pathway is highly competitive. Good preparation can improve mathematical maturity, but no programme can guarantee qualification.
